Bread pudding

Here’s a warm, comforting recipe for classic Bread Pudding — soft on the inside, golden on top, and perfect with a drizzle of vanilla or bourbon sauce. 🍞🍮

🍽️ Ingredients (serves 6–8)

For the pudding:

  • 6 cups day-old bread, cubed
(French bread, brioche, challah, or white sandwich bread work best)

  • 2 cups milk (whole milk or half-and-half)

  • ½ cup heavy cream (optional, for extra richness)

  • large eggs

  • ¾ cup sugar (white or a mix of white and brown)

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

  • ¼ cup butter, melted

  • ½ cup raisins or chopped pecans (optional)

For serving (optional):

  • Vanilla saucecaramel, or bourbon sauce

  • Powdered sugar for dusting

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Prep the bread:

    • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

    • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish (or similar).

    • Place cubed bread in the dish. If it’s fresh, toast it in the oven for 5–10 minutes to dry it slightly.

  2. Make the custard:

    • In a large bowl, whisk together milk, cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and melted butter.

    • Pour this mixture evenly over the bread.

    • Gently press the bread down to make sure it soaks up the liquid.

    • Stir in raisins or nuts, if using.

  3. Rest & bake:

    • Let the mixture sit for 15–20 minutes to absorb.

    • Bake uncovered for 40–50 minutes, until the top is golden and the custard is set (it should spring back lightly when touched).

  4. Serve:

    • Cool slightly before serving.

    • Drizzle with sauce, whipped cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar.

🍯 Optional Vanilla or Bourbon Sauce

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup butter

  • 1 cup sugar

  • egg, beaten

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (or 1 tablespoon bourbon)

Instructions:

  1. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.

  2. Stir in sugar and beaten egg, whisking constantly until smooth and slightly thickened (about 3 minutes).

  3. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla or bourbon.

  4. Spoon warm sauce over bread pudding to serve.

💡 Tips

  • Stale bread absorbs the custard best — if yours is fresh, dry it out in the oven first.

  • Add-ins like chocolate chipsapples, or cranberries make fun variations.

  • Leftovers reheat beautifully — microwave or bake covered with foil until warm.
